For nearly five decades, Pittsburgh Pipe has shown up where America builds. From the underground utility lines that power our cities to the bridges and ports that move goods across the country, our steel pipe is hard at work in projects that keep the nation running. The story starts in 1977 with a couple of founders in St. Louis who saw an opportunity to serve construction contractors better, and it continues today with a coast-to-coast operation built on the same straightforward promise: deliver the right pipe at the right time, every time. Here is how we got here and what we bring to your next project.
How a St. Louis Startup Became a National Steel Pipe Supplier
Every great company starts somewhere, and ours started in the American heartland with two founders and a clear vision for service.
Humble Beginnings in 1977
Joseph Bergfeld and Bill Manser launched Pittsburgh Pipe in St. Louis, Missouri, with one location and three employees. The original mission was simple: supply underground utility contractors with steel bore casing they could trust. From day one, the focus was on reliability, fast delivery, and treating every contractor like a long-term partner. That foundation still drives the company today, with Joseph Bergfeld leading as CEO and approaching a half century of service to the industry.
Steady Growth, Same Commitment
Today Pittsburgh Pipe runs three locations with more than 70 employees, and we have grown from a pure distributor into a company that manufactures, fabricates, and distributes its own product. We are strategically located in the center of the country, giving us truck, rail, and river access for fast shipping anywhere in the United States. Every piece of steel pipe we produce goes through 28 separate inspections and measurements before it leaves our facility, which is how we have earned the trust of contractors working on critical infrastructure for almost five decades.
A Full Line of Steel Pipe Built for American Infrastructure
Our steel pipe product lineup covers the full range of underground and structural construction needs. Each category is engineered for performance and backed by the same quality standards.
Steel Casing Pipe
Our steel casing pipe is available in virtually any diameter, wall thickness, and length needed for the job. Contractors rely on it for auger boring, road and rail crossings, tunnel encasements, and other underground utility work where a clean field fit is non-negotiable. We also stock common sizes for fast turnaround when timing matters.
Steel Pipe Pile and Piling Products
Pittsburgh Pipe supplies steel pipe pile in sizes from 6 5/8 inch outer diameter all the way up to 120 inch, in lengths up to 110 feet. Whether you need ERW, DSAW, or R&W manufacturing, straight seam or spiral weld, our team can match the spec. Add custom end beveling, end plates, J-slots, cutting teeth, or driving shoes through our in-house fabrication services.
Drilled Shaft Casing
For deep foundation work that demands precision, our drilled shaft casing meets the toughest dimensional and performance requirements. We add features like turning slots, lifting lugs, and cutting teeth so the casing arrives ready to perform in challenging soil.
Specialty Markets
When a project calls for something unique, we deliver every single time. Specialty offerings include road plate, bollards, water well casing, refinery pipe, stainless steel pipe, geothermal pipe, and more.
Industries Powered by Pittsburgh Pipe Steel Pipe
Our steel pipe shows up in some of the most demanding projects in America. The industries we serve all share one thing: they cannot afford to stop, and they cannot afford a supplier that misses delivery.
Transportation and Bridge Construction
State DOTs, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have all used our pipe on major projects. Bridges, highway crossings, and rail infrastructure depend on heavy-wall casing and piling that can handle decades of loading.
Marine, Ports, and Deep Foundations
Our piling products support docks, piers, marine terminals, and offshore foundations. Fin piles, tapered piling, and large-diameter pipe stand up to wave action, vessel impact, and constant exposure to harsh conditions. Protective coatings like coal tar epoxy and fusion bond epoxy keep marine pipe performing for decades.
Utility, Power, and Telecom
The original Pittsburgh Pipe customer was an underground utility contractor, and that market still drives a huge share of our business. Water, sewer, electric, and telecom installations all rely on our casing and conduit to protect critical infrastructure. As broadband and grid modernization investments roll out across the country, demand for quality conduit and casing keeps climbing.
Energy and Industrial
Wind turbine foundations, refinery pipe, boiler tube, geothermal applications, and rathole casing for the oil and gas sector round out our reach across heavy industry.
Stop chasing suppliers who overpromise and underdeliver. Pittsburgh Pipe provides U.S. manufactured steel pipe that arrives on schedule and ready to install. Explore more about our solutions.
Why Steel Pipe Piling Continues to Lead Deep Foundation Work
Steel pipe piling holds a special place in our product line and in the broader infrastructure world. There are good reasons engineers keep specifying it for projects that absolutely cannot fail.
Strength and Versatility
Steel pipe piling offers about 30% more skin friction than H piles, which means better load capacity at the same depth. The pile can be open-ended for easier driving in tough soil, or closed with an end plate for maximum bearing. Either way, it carries massive vertical and lateral loads while staying manageable to transport and handle on site. That balance of strength and weight makes it a favorite for contractors working on tight deadlines and challenging access conditions.
Customization for Every Site
Our steel pipe piling can be modified with cutting teeth, J slots, lifting holes, driving shoes, and protective coatings for marine or corrosive environments. We meet ASTM A252 Grades 2 and 3, modified Grade 3 with 50 KSI yield, ASTM A500, ASTM A53, and API 5L specifications. Splicing extends piles beyond 110 feet when the design demands it.
Quality, Logistics, and Service That Set Us Apart
Building a reputation for almost 50 years takes more than a good product. It takes a team that understands how construction really works.
Storage, Fabrication, and Delivery
We offer flexible short and long term storage, with every order held separately, documented, and photographed on request. Need fabrication while pipe is in storage? Our certified welders can add lift lugs, end plates, or couplers right on site. Then we ship by truck, rail, or barge to wherever the job is. That kind of one-stop service saves contractors time, money, and headaches.
Build It Right the First Time With Pittsburgh Pipe at Your Side
Pittsburgh Pipe has spent almost 50 years proving that quality steel pipe, honest service, and on-time delivery never go out of style. From our 1977 launch in St. Louis with three employees to a multi-location operation supporting infrastructure coast to coast, the mission has stayed the same. Contractors call us when their project cannot afford a misstep, and we deliver every time. The next chapter is being written on job sites across the country, and we are proud to be the supplier behind some of the most important infrastructure being built today. Let’s build something great together.
