How CSL Testing Tubes Are Used for Department of Transportation Projects

Crosshole sonic logging (CSL) tubes are the most common pipes to use for projects done by the Department of Transportation (DOT). This testing program is more effective than sonic echo testing because it identifies deep foundation defects and provides information on where the defects occur.

What Are Cross Hole Sonic Logging Specifications?

For the past ten years, CSL tubes have been used to test if concrete materials and deep foundations are structurally sound. Before CSL tubes, states didn’t include integrity testing materials in their transportation construction quotes. Now, each state integrates them into their construction bids.

Every state is different in its testing tube specifications for transportation projects. Many western states use plastic piping materials for their structural testing, while most states from Oklahoma to the East Coast have caught onto CSL piping materials for testing.

Since transportation construction is considered a big municipal project, CSL tubes must be made of steel and manufactured in the United States. Each state also provides different specifications for steel materials, so you must have a clear understanding of your state’s requirements.

Since 1977, Pittsburgh Pipe has supported America’s infrastructure by manufacturing and distributing high-quality industrial pipes. Contact us today to get CSL testing tubes for your next transportation project.

Concrete Foundation Testing for New Roads

CSL test tubes are reliable and accurate measuring tools that review the structural soundness of deep foundation elements such as roads and highways. These tests determine the integrity of drilled shafts by looking for potential problems in the new construction: soil intrusions, sand lenses, or voids.

When the DOT, state, county, or city reconstructs or builds a road, a concrete foundation test is performed with the help of CSL tubes. CSL tests can be performed on any concrete pile where two or more access tubes or coreholes have the ability to hold water and are present in the foundation. These tests rely on the propagation of ultrasonic waves between two or more access tubes. They measure the velocity and signal strength of the propagated waves.

New Bridge Foundation Testing

CSL tube testing is essential for new bridge foundations. The CSL method helps workers test the structure to eliminate the risk of crumbling foundations. This ensures that the foundation is sturdy and won’t be a liability in the future or cause harm or damage to road users.

When the DOT, state, county, or city builds bridges or other significant structures, they put shafts over concrete and perform the CSL method of integrity testing. In this process, there’s a big hole with a steel pipe that they fill with concrete. Then, licensed and professional engineers put six to eight CSL tubes around the hole as concrete is poured.

Lastly, they fill those up with water and drop pins hooked up to computers to create sonic waves—these sonic waves test to ensure that the structures are sound. The concrete is left in the shaft when the project is complete, and the rebar supports the concrete.

Why Use Pittsburgh Pipe CSL Tubes?

CSL tubes play a significant factor in testing the soundness of new roads, bridges, and other transportation structures. At Pittsburgh Pipe, we make obtaining CSL testing tubes easy. We custom tailor pipes to fit your project’s specific needs, so your workers don’t need to make any length adjustments on the jobsite.

Getting CSL tubes that are already custom fit to the needs of your project offers many benefits to your workers, their time, and your company’s financial resources. We understand that time is money. Since states pay union labor costs, that could waste state money if the workers stay longer than they need to cut, thread, and piece things together.

At Pittsburgh Pipe, we can thread tubes from a foot to 42 feet in length. We then ship your customized CSL tubes straight to the job site when they’re ready to be installed. Thanks to our advanced manufacturing process, the days of cutting and threading tubes in the field are over.

We have all the right pipes when you need them most. Contact us today to learn how we can be your partner in CSL testing tubes for your next transportation project!
