When the DOT, state, county, or city reconstructs or builds a road, a concrete foundation test is performed with the help of CSL tubes. CSL tests can be performed on any concrete pile where two or more access tubes or coreholes have the ability to hold water and are present in the foundation. These tests rely on the propagation of ultrasonic waves between two or more access tubes. They measure the velocity and signal strength of the propagated waves.
New Bridge Foundation Testing
CSL tube testing is essential for new bridge foundations. The CSL method helps workers test the structure to eliminate the risk of crumbling foundations. This ensures that the foundation is sturdy and won’t be a liability in the future or cause harm or damage to road users.
When the DOT, state, county, or city builds bridges or other significant structures, they put shafts over concrete and perform the CSL method of integrity testing. In this process, there’s a big hole with a steel pipe that they fill with concrete. Then, licensed and professional engineers put six to eight CSL tubes around the hole as concrete is poured.
Lastly, they fill those up with water and drop pins hooked up to computers to create sonic waves—these sonic waves test to ensure that the structures are sound. The concrete is left in the shaft when the project is complete, and the rebar supports the concrete.
